Students' reading

Welcome to this self-paced course on how to support students' reading.

CED is offering this course because many students find it difficult to read all the readings they are supposed to read. The amount of reading can be overwhelming, and the texts can be extremely difficult for some students.

Of course, university students must read a lot. And we can help them become better readers by paying attention to background knowledge, genre knowledge and reading strategies.

The course content is based upon an original course by Bente Kristiansen, Senior Consultant at AU, and is edited and facilitated by learning designer Emil Lohse and Simone Brendstrup.

Content

In this course, you will learn about the following themes:

  • Factors influencing the reading process
  • The importance of background knowledge - about the topic, the purpose of the text (genre knowledge), and the purpose for reading the text"
  • Different reading strategies

And you will find ideas for activities that support students' reading as well as questions for you about your own practice.

The entire course is estimated to take approximately 4 hours.

Sharing with colleagues

We recommend that you take this course together with colleagues, or discuss your reflections with colleagues from your department.

This course will:

  • identify relevant and necessary background knowledge for reading a text.
  • point to how different genres have different purposes and thus require different reading strategies.
  • guide you to develop relevant reading guides or questions for the students in order to make their reading more focused.
