AARHUS BSS: Introduction to University Teaching for PhD students

Objective

Introduction to University Teaching is a practical, hands-on course designed to enhance early-career researchers' teaching skills in alignment with AU's pedagogical strategies and requirements based on the Danish framework for advancing university pedagogy (Level 1) principles.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, the participants should be able to:

  • Explain and use basic concepts about learning
  • Plan, conduct, and evaluate individual teaching sessions.
  • Choose and discuss relevant pedagogical strategies to foster student engagement in and between lessons

Content

The course includes the following topics:

  • Teaching vs. learning
  • Student engagement
  • Alignment between:
    • learning outcomes
    • learning activities
    • and assessment
  • Educational technology

During the course the participants will work on improving their own teaching in relation to the course topics and principles, including planning and conducting a microteaching session.

The course starts online with both individual and group activities.

The students meet face-to-face in two classroom sessions. Between the two classroom sessions, the participants will work online individually and in groups.

Course format

Introduction to University Teaching for PhD students is a blended learning course addressing PhD students from Graduate schools of ARTS and BSS.

The course is mandatory for PhD students from ARTS and optional for PhD students from BSS.

  • Participants: Max. 15
  • Language: By default, the course is in English but can be held in Danish if all participants agree. Group work can be in either English or Danish, depending on the participants' language.
