Make your oral exam valuable

In a time where Generative AI is becoming a larger part of university educations and examinations, we should reconsider the possibilities and advantages of oral examinations.
During the workshop, you will begin planning or refining your upcoming oral examination and establish alignment between the chosen examination format and the course's teaching method and content.
You will reflect on the advantages and disadvantages of various oral examination formats and their appropriateness in specific contexts.

Learning outcome

After the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Formulate relevant questions for an oral examination in a given course
  • Formulate relevant assessment criteria for an oral examination in a given course
  • Plan alignment between teaching and the oral examination format in a given course
  • Argue for and against different oral examination formats based on course content and objectives
  • Assess which oral examination format is most appropriate in a given course based on the course's content and objectives

Content

The course is conducted as a practice-oriented workshop with both presentations and activities.
Participants gain insights into various oral examination formats as well as topics such as alignment, assessment criteria, and questioning techniques.
The workshop focuses on course examinations, not defense of BA projects, theses, or PhD dissertations.
