What is meaningful learning?

Perhaps some teaching faculty have not stopped to consider what learning is. They have become experts in their field and their focus is on sharing the information they have as subject matter experts.

In this lecture and workshop series, we will ask what learning is and how we can work with teaching faculty to develop a reflective perspective on the nature of learning.

The first meeting will focus on learning as a meaning-making activity. If learning is about making sense of things and producing meaning collaboratively, then building relationships and enhancing communication are central to learning. How can we use, for example, peer feedback, active listening, and working in groups to enhance the learners understanding of their learning process?

In the second meeting, we will focus on what we can learn from looking at informal learning communities of practice. The craft beer community in the U.S. will be used as an example of an informal learning community. What can we learn from the multitude of communities that co-create knowledge through sharing and collaboration?

In our final meeting, we will focus on the ways that digital technologies enhance communication by transforming space and time allowing groups who are learning together to creatively reshape their community interactions. Empirical work with a group of maths teachers will be used to demonstrate the flexibility and fluidity of the digital for supporting learning.

Format

The lecture and workshop series are held by visiting scholar Professor Wesley Shumar (Department of Communication, Culture and Media, Drexel University, Philadelphia) and Associate Professor Sarah Robinson (Centre for Educational Development, Aarhus University).

The workshop part will then take up the remaining time (at least an hour).
